Friends event – a blooming successThe Friends of the Sale Botanic Gardens attracted dozens of keen gardeners to a rose pruning demonstration at the Gardens last Saturday, July 23. By Wellington Shire Council - 1st August 2005 - Back to News The group has about 20 regulars and more than double that number attended the demonstration, which was given by Melbourne University's Burnley Campus senior lecturer Clive Sorrell.
Wellington’s Manager Open Space, Tim Rowe conducted a guided tour of the park highlighting about 30 historically significant trees, some of which date back to the 1880s.
Mr Rowe also detailed future development initiatives that are part of Council’s Landscape Masterplan for the Gardens.
Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault said: "The Masterplan was adopted in 2003 and it is being implemented in stages - several initiatives such as upgrading the Fauna Park and building the new toilet block have already been completed.
"Future stages include more planting, better signage, improving the park entries and closing off the road at the eastern end of the lake to vehicular traffic and turning it into a shared trail."
Cr Gault said the rose pruning demonstration was just one of the many excellent initiatives organised by the Friends of the Sale Botanic Gardens each year.
"We congratulate and thank the group for their wonderful efforts – they are volunteers who put in a lot of time organising various demonstrations and undertaking monthly working bees in the Gardens.
"Gardening is a terrific hobby because people of all ages can participate and it encourages us to lead a healthy lifestyle."
