Completing The Final Link

Bass Coast Shire Council contractors are about to begin the final stage of the Phillip Island Road shared path between The Esplanade and Sunderland Bay Road completing the pathway.

By Bass Coast - 13th October 2010 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said works on the 2.5 kilometre long 2.5 metre wide off-road shared path would start on 8 October and be finished by 31 January 2011, weather permitting.

"This path is part of Council’s bicycle strategy to strengthen the bike path network and link communities around Phillip Island," said Mr Piasente.

"It is a great way to promote healthy lifestyles encouraging exercise like bike riding and walking.

"This is the missing connection to link recreation users between Cowes to San Remo.

"The works involve the construction of a concrete reinforced path, intersection improvements at Sunderland Bay Road and Elwood Avenue, road sealing, asphalting of driveways next to the path, naturestrip reinstatement and minor vegetation removal," continued Mr Piasente.

The project has been awarded to Terra Firma Excavations Pty Ltd.

"Terrafirma will make every effort to minimise disruption to residents during the construction period," said Mr Piasente.

"Residents next to the works have been notified. However, due to the concrete and driveway works there may be times when access to and from properties is restricted.

"The contractor will work with residents to reduce inconvenience."

The contractor intends to start the path near the Surf Beach General store and work outwards in both directions to complete the path before Christmas.

All remaining works will be completed by 31 January 2011.
