Volunteers Ready To “Clean Up” For The Environment

Make a significant contribution that benefits our natural environment

Bass Coast Shire Council is encouraging members of the community to take part in this year’s ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ on Sunday 3 March.

"Clean Up Australia Day is a terrific opportunity for people to spend a few hours cleaning up their part of the country," said Derek Hibbert, Environmental/Coastal Officer with Bass Coast Shire Council.

"In only a few hours, people can make a significant contribution that benefits our natural environment," he said.

Clean Up Australia Day is the largest community participation event in the country, attracting half a million volunteers every year. Since 1989, more than 5 million Australians have volunteered their timeto clean up Australia. As a result approximately 180,000 tonnes of waste has been removed from beaches, roadsides, waterways and parklands across the country.

Last year more than 300 people across the Shire participated in the event. This year 27 community groups and agencies have already registered to clean up 21 sites.

If you are interested in taking part in Clean Up Australia Day, simply come along to one of the sites listed in the Clean Up Australia Day advert in this paper. If you wish to register another site or group, or would like more information, contact Derek Hibbert at Bass Coast Shire Council on 5671 2211 or Clean Up Australia Day on 1800 024 890.
