Council Briefs

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 31st March 2004 - Back to News

COUNCIL MEETING CHANGES

East Gippsland Shire Council has cancelled the Council Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 14 April.

This will enable Councillors to meet commitments associated with the visit to East Gippsland of the Governor of Victoria, Mr John Landy, AC, MBE, and Mrs Landy between 14 and 16 April.

Council will instead hold a Council Meeting on Wednesday, 21 April, as well as the scheduled Wednesday, 28 April.

The Governor’s itinerary for the three-day tour of East Gippsland Shire will be finalised this week.

CRICKETERS IN TOWN

Deputy Mayor, Cr Jane Rowe, will formally welcome three of Victoria’s Pura Cup winning cricketers this Thursday at Bairnsdale’s Main Street Rotunda.

Former Bairnsdale cricketer, Cameron White, along with captain Darren Berry and Australian international representative, Ian Harvey, will display the Pura Cup at a community function starting at 2.00pm.

After winning the state level cricket title, Cricket Victoria decided that country Victorians should have the opportunity to share the honour with the players, therefore organising a tour of regional areas.

Memorabilia items will also be on display and an autograph session will be available.

COUNCIL HOSTING CFA RECEPTION

East Gippsland Shire Council will welcome approximately 2,000 visitors this weekend for the CFA Region 11 Rural Fire Brigade State Championships, being held at Bairnsdale’s Howitt Park.

Prior to the weekend’s activities, Council will host a Civic Reception for CFA officials, including CFA Chairman Len Foster. This will be held at the Bairnsdale RSL on Friday evening.

"The event promises to be an economic boon for local businesses with many accommodation houses fully booked," said Shire Chief Executive, Steve Kozlowski.

"The local Region 11 organising committee should be congratulated on its efforts in preparing for what will be a huge local event."

LIBRARY CERTIFICATE

East Gippsland Shire Regional Library was recently presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind (RVIB).

The certificate was in appreciation for the support of people who are blind or vision impaired in the Bairnsdale Library.

"The library was well set out and accommodated for a person with a cane or a guide dog to move around the facility with ease and no obstacles in the way," said RVIB representative, Robert Allen, in a letter sent to the East Gippsland Shire Regional Library.

The letter also made reference to the large number of audio books available, appropriate lighting levels and the extremely helpful, professional and knowledgeable staff.
