Lake Hyland Ready For Another Round Of Fishing FunPicturesque Lake Hyland at Churchill will soon be the scene for another full day of fun-filled activities centred on fishing. By Latrobe City Council - 30th April 2009 - Back to News The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) will stage a family fishing festival at the lake on Saturday 2 May 2009.
Latrobe City’s coordinator recreation liaison, Simon Clark, said the Lake Hyland Fishing Festival has proven to be a wonderful outing for families and follows on from a very successful day held at the lake in April last year.
"The upcoming event this Saturday will feature instructed fishing workshops for children (4–16 yrs), casting and knot tying clinics, cooking demonstrations, and fishing prizes and give-aways," Mr Clark said.
"The ever popular ‘Flathead Fred’ will have kids and adults alike in fits of laughter with his entertaining stage shows and the day will be topped off with displays, stalls and entertainment for the whole family."
Mr Clark said that in the months leading up to the festival, the lake has been stocked with many ready-to-catch rainbow trout, including premier trout (at least a kilogram in size) as part of Fisheries Victoria’s annual fish stocking program, which aims to improve freshwater fishing opportunities.
"Lake Hyland is one of five ‘Premier Lakes’ being developed across Victoria as part of the state government’s $3.2 million Go Fishing in Victoria investment in recreational fishing, which aims to increase participation in fishing, particularly amongst families, Mr Clark explained.
"More than eighty families attended last year’s event, with all involved saying that as a result of their experience they were more likely to go fishing in Victoria. Ninety-four per cent said their fishing knowledge had improved because of the event.
"Families going to Lake Hyland this year will be able to enjoy improved fishing access with additional fishing platforms around the banks of the lake, and the new boardwalk which completes a path that circumnavigates the lake," Mr Clark said.
The free festival starts at 9am and families interested in attending the day are strongly encouraged to pre-register their children to reserve limited workshop places.
Children who are registered will be provided with fishing equipment and bait to use during the workshops. All members of registered families will not require a fishing licence on the day. To pre-register for the workshops or for more information, ring the DPI customer service centre on 13 61 86.
The Lake Hyland Family Fishing Festival is being planned and run in partnership with Latrobe City Council, Mathison Park Advisory Committee, VRFish, several local angling clubs, Fishcare Victoria, and other stakeholders.
