Pneumococcal Reminder

Wellington Shire Council immunisation team is reminding parents of children born between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2004 to have their children immunised for the pneumococcal disease.

By Wellington Shire - 12th December 2005 - Back to News

"This immunisation is free for children in this age group, but only until the end of December," said Samantha Lowery, Environmental Health Officer for Wellington Shire Council.

The free catch up program was introduced by the Federal government on the 1 January 2005 and will cease as of the 31 December 2005 for children in this age group.

Prevenar is currently available free of charge for children in this category through the community immunisation sessions throughout the shire. As of 1 January 2006, this vaccine will only be offered free as a part of the normal immunisation schedule for infants at 2, 4 and 6 months of age.

"Pneumococcal disease is a potential killer, particularly among those under five years of age," said Ms Lowery.

"Those aged one year and under have the highest risk of contracting pneumococcal, so the earlier the immunisation is given the better."

This vaccine along with all vaccines offered on the National Immunisation Schedule will be available from council’s community immunisation sessions at Yarram, Heyfield, Maffra and Sale.

For more information on the pneumococcal vaccine or other immunisations or a copy of the Wellington Shire Immunisation Session Schedule please contact the Environmental Health Unit on 5142 3420 or visit our website www.wellington.vic.gov.au.
