Licola Is Open For Business The Licola General Store has reopened following bushfires and the mudslide in late February. By Wellington Shire Council - 8th May 2007 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council Mayor Cr Beth Ripper said it was a very positive sign of recovery in the Shire
"It is great to see Licola is once again open for business and can welcome visitors. The store is an integral part of the community and to it operating is a great sign that Licola is recovering.
People can come for a day trip or stay overnight at the Lions Wilderness Village and know that there will be somewhere to buy an ice-cream or pick up provisions."
"Council officers have been very active in providing assistance in the clean up process and in planning for the future. The officers have worked closely with the Lions Club and the State Government," said Cr Ripper.
Funding for a new bore from the state government has been secured and a comprehensive town development plan will also be written funded by contributions from Lions, Council and the State Government.
Council is also pleased that Parks Victoria has been working to open the Tamboritha Road. This is a popular route for many visitors, including those who wish to four wheel drive.
General store operator Ray Winter said the store was looking forward to welcoming people back to Licola.
"We are excited and relieved to be open again. We now hope that people will visit and stay in the area."
The Lions Licola Wilderness Village is also open for business.
"The Village is open for full trading and it is open to all kinds of user groups and visitors including walking groups, 4WD groups, Church groups, weddings and families," said Ken Hunter from the Lions Wilderness Village.
"Licola has had its share of issues lately but we can start looking for the future and welcoming people back to enjoy all that the area has to offer.
