Final Tally For National Tree Day

Students and volunteers across Wellington planted more than 1000 trees and shrubs

By Karen Gregory - 28th August 2002 - Back to News

Students and volunteers across Wellington planted more than 1000 trees and shrubs provided by Council’s Garden Nursery for National Tree Day.

Environmental planner Natalie Liddell said that the final tally revealed a tremendous effort by schools and the community to green Wellington Shire.

"While Council provided 1000 trees and shrubs for volunteers, heaps more were planted by people who got them from other sources," she said.

"It’s also been great to see everyone taking such an interest in the welfare of their plants since National Tree Day. Volunteers tell me that they’ve been checking them regularly to see how they’re doing and I’m happy to report that everything appears to be growing well."

In Sale, the City’s Scouts, supported by about 50 mums, dads, kids and members of the Streets of Harmony Youth Committee made a huge contribution between Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt, planting everything provided by the Shire and sending back to the Depot for more.

Students from Araluen PS, Meerlieu PS and Dago PS planted trees, shrubs and grasses at their respective schools.

Year ten students from Maffra Secondary College helped revegetate a creek in Newry, and the community joined together in Castleburn to plant trees along the Castleburn Creek. Other eager volunteers braved the rain and joined in at Loch Sport to plant along the foreshore of Lake Victoria.
