Minister for Planning, Hon Richard Wynne; the Red Tape Commissioner, Matthew Butlin; and the Lead Director Regional of Victorian Planning Authority, Tim Peggie participated at a Question and Answer panel at the forum.

The forum is designed to provide an opportunity for businesses to engage with Council and discuss future development projects. The forum is supported by local developers, real estate agents, planners, surveyors, consultants, builders and financial providers.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said the forum was a way to establish and maintain greater relationships within the local development sector.

"We were delighted to have Minister for Planning, Hon Richard Wynne, present at the forum. He answered a number of questions in relation to planning fee increases and acknowledged the contribution that our regional city makes to the state.

"He also spoke about the role of the Victorian Planning Authority in the Latrobe Valley and its aims to provide support and capacity-building for councils in regional Victoria through the provision of targeted funding and staff resources. The program, including a 'Planning Flying Squad' and 'Smart Planning' (to cut red tape) unblocks delays in the planning system to speed up the delivery of projects that provide employment growth.

"Mr Butlin advised that he would be spending two days a weeks in the region for the next few months. Having direct access to his office will be a great benefit in enabling our local developers to get direct advice and hopefully to progress plans for development.

"The timing of the forum was perfect. The impending closure of Hazelwood means our community will look to government for economic hope. The forum provided a chance to have conversations with government about streamlining processes that will genuinely encourage economic expansion," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
