Council Rates Must Be Part of Drought Relief

Call for further steps for drought relief.

By Portal Admin - 5th November 2018 - Back to News

Farmers in East Gippsland and northern Victoria have been calling out for further drought assistance, including on council rates relief.

The drought package announced today will take some of the pressure off farmers and their families, but we urge the Victorian Government to go one step further.

Farmers in East Gippsland and northern Victoria have told the Liberal Nationals repeatedly in recently weeks that relief on shire rates would be a great help, and we passed that message on to Daniel Andrews in a letter earlier this week.

In our letter, we also gave the Premier our assurance that the Liberal Nationals would provide any support needed during the caretaker period to deliver further help for our farmers.

We’ve heard heart-breaking stories from farmers who have been forced to sell off entire herds of livestock because they can’t meet the high price of fodder and temporary water.

The Liberal Nationals have listened to our farmers, and we stand ready to assist them as these tough seasonal conditions prevail across the State.
