Intern Counts On Council Support

An innovative internship scheme offers sound grasp of business practice

By Karen Gregory - 23rd July 2002 - Back to News

First year university student Richard Parry already has a sound grasp of business practice – thanks to an innovative internship scheme.

For the past four months 18-year-old Richard has been learning the ropes in the Finance Department at Wellington Shire Council.

He is one of 14 first-year university students selected to take part in Gippsland Internship Program for 2002 run by Monash University Campus.

The program links students with a specific local employer in their field of study. Employers provide fully paid part-time employment during study, as well as vacation employment and a minimum of 12 months full-time employment following completion of their degree. Further, each student receives a $1000 textbook allowance from their new employer in each year of their studies.

A key element of Richard’s studies for his Bachelor of Business and Commerce degree is to gain on the job experience at the Council. Over the next three years he will learn to deal with all financial aspects of Council business, including budget preparation, rates and accounts.

He will major in accounting after gaining his degree

"Council is firmly committed to encouraging our young people to make their home in Wellington," said Mayor Malcolm Hole.

"This scheme gives us the opportunity to provide support and part-time employment for students and to ensure we have a pool of highly skilled, work-oriented graduates that we know will be valuable attributes to any organisation.

"The more talented young people we keep in the area, the better our outlook for the future.
