Wellington Council optimistic of RAAF Base East Sale expansion

By Wellington Shire Council - 19th September 2005 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council is very optimistic its concerted push to have the RAAF College Officer Training School relocated from Point Cook to East Sale will get the green light after speaking to its submission to the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Public Works Inquiry in Sale today (Friday, 16 September).

The Committee travelled to the RAAF Base East Sale to hear two presentations – one by Wellington Shire Council and the other by Alan Lewis, President of the Sale Rotary Club.

The Committee also heard from Brigadier Peter Hutchinson who explained the details of the proposal to the committee, including its facilities, location and environmental issues.

The Council’s submission, one of 11 received by the Committee in support of the relocation of the School to East Sale, outlined how the proposal could achieve cost efficiencies for the Government; dramatically improve current training facilities at the 62-year-old RAAF Base East Sale; and, provide hundreds of junior officers with an enviable lifestyle in a welcoming community.

The Wellington Council delegation comprised of Mayor Peter Gault, Cr Malcolm Hole, Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb and RAAF Base East Sale Expansion Community Committee member Group Captain (Ret) Rob Oliver.

The Committee heard the relocation of the Officer Training School to East Sale would provide a significant boost to the Wellington economy and its business sector, which has been gearing up for the proposed $65.6 million expansion of the base for some time

Wellington Mayor Peter Gault said: "The base brings substantial economic benefit to Wellington Shire and Gippsland, currently representing more than $20 million a year. The transfer of the Officer Training School will further enhance the prosperity of the region long into the future and will provide welcome strengthening of the Wellington community.

"It will also assist the Federal Government, by building on the excellent training skills already provided by RAAF Base East Sale.

"We were extremely pleased to have the opportunity to make a presentation to the Committee and we received a very good hearing."

The nine-member bipartisan Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee will now make a recommendation to the Federal Government on whether the project should proceed using funding allocated in the Federal Budget.

Cr Gault said he was optimistic the Committee would recommend the funding be granted for the expansion of the RAAF Base East Sale.

"We are looking forward to a positive outcome from the Committee and an early start to the project when it announces its decision."

Cr Gault thanked the Wellington community for supporting the Council in its bid to have the Officer Training School relocated to Sale and expand the base in the process.

"The Council has received great support from the community on this issue, especially from our RAAF Base East Sale Expansion Community Committee - their assistance and support has been extremely vital."
