The Gippsland Portal presents students with a vision for the future

The future of online journalism – how will we communicate news in tomorrow’s world? This was the issue raised and discussed by the journalists of the future – students of the Monash University Campus, Berwick.

In a presentation made by two members of the Gippsland Portal team (Antony Svasek, Team Leader and Emma Lewis, Editor), the class considered the role of online journalism in modern society and the possibilities for the future.

The concept of extension, rather than extinction, played a major role in the lecture. Technology is developing and extending our media experiences. We can now access the latest news through Internet, with websites such as that of the Herald Sun. While the paper still appears on many doorsteps, many people will find that the online version is more efficient. The website is readily available from anywhere in the world, informative yet concise and easy to scan for articles that relate to each individual of the audience.

Exciting developments in the field, such as this allow for us to envision the future. If the class present at the lecture is anything to go by, the responsibility of communicating news, through any media, is safe in the hands of the next generation.

Special thanks to lecturer Kamal Siddiqi for arranging the presentation.
