Tales Of Adventure At The Library

Wellington Shire Council’s Library Service will be playing host to distinguished adventure writers Alan Attwood and Tim Cope later this month, as they tour local venues presenting free talks about their books, travels and their lives as authors.

By Wellington Shire Council - 4th November 2003 - Back to News

Their tour of the Shire on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 November is part of the Writers on the Road program organised by the Council and the State Library of Victoria.

Alan Attwood was born in Scotland and emigrated to Australia with his family when he was four. He has worked as an abalone packer, a dish-washer and mail-sorter, but, since 1978, mainly as a journalist. From 1995 to 1998 he was a New York-based correspondent for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers, and more recently has been a columnist for The Age. He was shortlisted for the Australian/Vogel Literary Award with his novel Sinking Into Winter in 1990, and Breathing Under Water was published in 1997. His latest work, Burke’s Soldier, is the story of John King, the only survivor of Burke and Wills’ expedition.

Tim Cope was only 21 when he and friend Chris Hatherly set out to ride recumbent bicycles 10,000 kilometres across Russia, Siberia, Mongolia and China. They filmed their journey and made a documentary for ABC TV, and have since written Off the Rails, which was published this year and is the funny, inspirational story of their adventure. Tim was named the Young Australian Adventurer of the Year in 2002 and has just returned from another trip to Russia and Finland.
