Paris and Rome highlighted at Gallery

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is currently exhibiting Other Cities, an exhibition of paintings by Melbourne artist Alex Zubryn, which showcases a selection of works depicting Paris and Rome.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that Other Cities is a series of paintings that references the artist’s travels in Europe.

"The original inspiration for the paintings arose from Zubryn’s time in Rome, during which he took the opportunity to tour the city with historians and archaeologists. He became interested in piecing together painted views of ancient Rome alongside images of contemporary life," Ms Tegart said.

"Zubryn also looked at the urban space as if on an archaeological dig, sorting and stacking sections of imagery in order to reflect encounters with the environments through which he moved. The views encompassed the textures of everyday life and included scenes of edifices alongside the clutter of signage, transportation and people."

"When Zubryn returned to Australia he used his photo-documentation as a basis for continuing with the series of paintings. The process of sorting the photos brought to mind collections of memorabilia and cultural artefacts belonging to people from different cultural backgrounds. In painting these images, the artist has avoided presenting a single unified vision, instead searching for connections between multiple stories," Ms Tegart added.

The paintings in the Other Cities exhibition depict various French and Roman icons, including the Pantheon, Mausoleum of Augustus, Place de la Concorde and the Louvre. The exhibition will be on display at Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 12 December.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
