For its construction of the centre, local Master Builder R&J van Poppel Ltd has won two categories of the association’s Excellence in Construction Awards for: Best Commercial/Industrial Project Over $3 Million – South; and the MBAV Regional Commercial Builder of the Year - South East.

The facility which officially opened at the end of last year, is essentially a ‘waterfront’ building, intrinsically linked to the Port of Sale it joins. The unique design of the centre has been conceived as a long wedge shaped structure, sloped in section from a high point at the main entrance down to a lower point towards the port made it a serious contender for the awards.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "We are delighted that our entertainment centre has been recognised with such prestigious awards. The facility has proved to be a fantastic cultural asset for the Wellington community and Gippsland region since it opened and is a great credit to the construction expertise of R&J van Poppel and all the sub-contractors involved.

"I would urge anyone who has not yet visited the entertainment centre to go along and take a look, and to experience one of its shows. That way you’ll get to fully appreciate what makes this great cultural asset for the shire so special."

The centre is also a contender in the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter 2004 Awards for Institutional - New Building and will be eligible additionally for the Regional Prize - with the winners to be announced shortly.
