Let The Youth Action Begin

A new Youth Plan will support agencies and young people to improve youth services in Bass Coast.

Leadership, advocacy, youth engagement and coordination are the four focus areas of the Bass Coast Shire Council Youth Action Plan 2011 – 2015 launched on Thursday, 16 February.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman, said young people were valued members of the community and the Plan would guide Council’s work over the next five years.

"While Council itself does not directly deliver services to young people, we work closely with our community service providers," said Cr Dowman. The Plan will see Council take a significant role in supporting the community to offer services, advocating to all sectors of government for funding and continuing a dialogue with young people for what they need in Bass Coast.

Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said Council’s aim was to support its specialist partners to meet the immediate challenges youth may be faced with.

"This includes providing infrastructure such as recreation centres and parks, as well as funding for the external provision of youth services. There will be a focus on long term action to improve the health and wellbeing of young people across Bass Coast," continued Mr Piasente.

"The Plan is based on extensive consultation with youth service providers and over 300 young people. The launch of the Plan was also an opportunity to say thank you to some of these young people who committed to giving us feedback."

All the young people who provided feedback as part of consultation for the Plan went into a special prize draw. Four names were drawn and each won a $100 voucher from a local surf shop.

"I would like to congratulate our winners Austin Myers, Bailey Poole, Joe Magro, and joint winners Jacob, Nathan and Bronte Dakin," said Mr Piasente.

"We want to encourage young people to continue to be involved in planning for the services that they use. This will help us find out what is working effectively and identify service gaps," Mr Piasente said.
