Liberals To Build A Kangaroo Processing Industry

A Liberal Government will end the senseless waste of culled kangaroos by allowing processing in Victoria, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

By Phillip Davis - 16th August 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis said despite tens of thousands of kangaroos being culled every year in Victoria, processing of the carcasses is currently illegal.

Therefore, the delicious kangaroo meat you order and pay a good price for in a Victorian restaurant, is not actually local produce.

Currently, restaurants obtain their kangaroo meat from interstate where processing is allowed, while locally culled kangaroos are left to rot.

"Kangaroo meat is a lean and healthy delicacy, and there are so many other products that can be produced with kangaroo by-products, yet here in Victoria we waste this resource," Mr Davis said.

"Up to 100,000 kangaroos are culled in Victoria each year, yet Victorians are not allowed to process this meat for human or animal consumption."

Mr Davis said a Liberal Government would change the present legislation to allow for the establishment of a new kangaroo processing industry in Victoria.

"Changing the laws on kangaroo processing will make better use of our abundant resource of kangaroos in Victoria, and will open the doors for the export and sale of kangaroo and other kangaroo products.

"Instead of sending our money interstate, restaurants will be able to source local kangaroo meat for their diners.

"Other industries utilising kangaroo products may also develop.

"It makes sense to make use of such a valuable natural resource, instead of leaving it to rot.

"A Liberal Government will cut the red tape and regulation, change the law and allow kangaroo processing to prosper as a new industry in Victoria."
