Touring exhibition of Peter Atkins paintings comes to Gallery

Opening on Friday 23 January 2004 at Latrobe Regional Gallery is a powerful exhibition presenting a selection of paintings made over the last 13 years by one of Australia’s finest and most recognised contemporary artists.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that the exhibition ‘Peter Atkins: big paintings 1990 – 2003’ attested to the artist’s ongoing and developing strength.

"The exhibition presents 20 large-scale paintings collated by Meryl Ryan, from Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, in consultation with the artist. This striking selection of works forms a stunning and cohesive exhibition tracing a timeline through a selection of key pieces from each series and phase of Atkins’ practice.

"It follows on from a successful artist-in-residence program at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery in which Atkins spent a month, during the summer of 2001-02, using the gallery as a studio in which to paint and engage visitors in his work processes," Ms Tegart explained.

Ms Tegart said that Atkins’ paintings reflected an attraction to life’s ‘small things’, to objects and designs that have an unpretentious and non-reverential quality.

"He collects and assembles small ordinary objects, such as a paper cup handle, a toe separator, bottle tops, condom labels, buckles and buttons and transforms the joy of their design into paintings with multiple layers of subtle and rich colours. He also collects craft and ritual objects from outside the Western mainstream, expanding his point of reference to objects handled by humans throughout time," Ms Tegart concluded.

Latrobe Regional Gallery is the only Victorian venue for this exciting and timely exhibition and continues at Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 14 March.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
