Come Diving For Pearls At The Latrobe Performing Arts Centre

Diving For Pearls

Diving For Pearls

Katherine Thomson’s Diving for Pearls dramatically records the moment Australia joined the vast world of globalised economics in the 1980s and the consequences of that action for the lives of working men and women.

A production by Christine Harris and HIT Productions, Australia’s Premier Theatre Touring Company, Diving for Pearls comes to the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 18 July from 8pm.

Latrobe City Council’s performing arts and venues coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that whilst Diving for Pearls was pertinent in its time, it is still highly relevant today.

"Both socially and politically Australians are still living through the repercussions of that moment. As the first major production of this play since 2001, it is indeed a timely revival. Globalisation, climate change and the strong Australian dollar and other socio-economic challenges are placing increasing daily pressure on the type of older regional manufacturing and mining communities so graphically depicted in this play.

"The story is set in an industrialised coastal city on the cusp of this change and the response of a couple at the prime of their life – the feisty, irrepressible Barbara and her would-be boyfriend the retiring but stubborn Den. Their lives are further complicated by the arrival of Barbara’s simple

daughter Verge, her snobbish sister Marj and Den’s upwardly mobile, brother-in-law Ron. Given the desperate nature of the characters’ circumstances the play is often dramatic, involving and moving, but this is tempered by a wry, sometimes hilarious and very Australian sense of humour.

"Filled with comic touches, endearing characters and familiar situations, audiences around the country will readily identify with the major characters' struggles.

"Starring Kevin Harrington, Heather Bolton, Christopher Bunworth, Catherine Hill and Marissa Bennett, Diving for Pearls is Australian theatre at its best," Ms Roberts concluded.

Diving for Pearls is on at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 18 July from 8pm. The bar is open from 7pm. Tickets are available from the box office on 5176 3559.
