Drought Relief Necessary in Latrobe – NortheAppeal for support for farmers in drought conditions. By Portal Admin - 8th June 2019 - Back to News Member for Morwell Russell Northe has once again in Parliament called upon the Minister for Agriculture to provide much-needed support, to our Latrobe Valley farmers who are experiencing continued drought conditions.
"I’m continuing to fight for local farmers who are doing it tough and it’s incumbent on the Minister to meet with, and listen to, our local farmers", Mr Northe said.
"As it stands the Government is ignoring the plight of Latrobe City and Gippsland based farmers, but hopefully if the Minister heard first- hand the concerns of our farmers then maybe she might introduce some meaningful and practical assistance", Mr Northe said.
"It’s grossly unfair that the State Government continues to ignore our farmers and refuse to extend the supports that’s afforded to farmers in other municipalities and in other regions of Victoria".
Recently in Parliament the Premier promised; "The government will continue to provide support—real support, not just politically convenient support—to all drought-affected farmers" (ref).
"I’m calling out the Government for turning their back on this guarantee from the Premier", Mr Northe said.
"It just beggars belief that despite long term farmers stating that this is the worst drought they have ever experienced, the Government refuses to expand the criteria on its existing drought relief programs and won’t consider municipal rate relief - an initiative it supported back in 2008 Mr Northe added.
"Drought knows no arbitrary lines, farming families are suffering in our towns: they need support and they need it now".
Mr Northe said that that Minister for Agriculture has 30 days to respond to his request.
Mr. Northe’s contribution is included in the Hansard excerpt attached, for your reference
