A team of six Bass Coast Shire Council staff recently came third in a challenge that showcased the skills of Victorian local government managers. The Bass Coast team was the highest ranking team from a rural Council. The Bass Coast team ranked third overall in the 2001 Local Government Managers Australia Management Challenge, with only Knox City and Moonee Valley City Councils scoring higher.

“Being ranked the highest scoring rural shire team is indicative of the outstanding professionalism of our Council staff and this excellent result is a credit to the Bass Coast Shire Council team, said Cr. Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.

“Council is committed to fostering the development of its staff and encouraging continuous improvement from within the organisation because this will ultimately enhance our service delivery to residents,” said Cr. Sage.

Fred Huitema, who was Bass Coast’s Team Leader during the Challenge, explained that the Challenge involved each council team negotiating a series of hypothetical management scenarios. The teams were independently assessed on their use of available resources; management of the decision making process and their ability to create innovative solutions to complex problems.

Some of the tasks included writing a marketing plan for a proposed market garden project and negotiating with other Councils about shared resources.

Bass Coast Shire Council was represented by:
Fred Huitema    Team Leader, Roads
Danny Luna  Director, Corporate Services
Margaret Ryan  Team Leader, Customer Service
Paul Smith  Manager, Environment
Doug Cooney  Team Leader, Community Protection
Carol McCormack  Communications Coordinator

Just for the record, Knox City, the team that won the Victorian Challenge, went on to place second at the Australasian final.
