Christmas MessageIf ever we needed a reminder that our community can come together in a time of need, the fire situation across eastern Victoria in recent weeks has provided it. By The Nationals - 20th December 2006 - Back to News It is often in a time of adversity that the true spirit of a community shows and, as usual, the ability to help others and work together has come to the fore throughout this period.
This demonstrates to me that even if that spirit is not always on open display, it is there just under the surface.
Perhaps there are some lessons in there for Christmas, when the underlying message is peace, love and understanding for all.
At this time of the year it is good to recognise our community strength and appreciate what that means to us all.
It is not always the Aussie way to be overt and show our feelings, but it is good to know in times of difficulty there are people who will help.
At Christmas, let us think about how we can extend that assistance to those in less fortunate circumstances, both here in Australia and overseas.
From a personal perspective, I would like to thank my constituency for its faith in re-electing me for another term as your Upper House member.
The changes to the Upper House system implemented for the 2006 State election meant that re-election for me and The Nationals generally was always going to be a struggle and I am delighted that I have the continued opportunity to represent this region.
Finally, please take care over the festive season. It is a chance to take a break, reflect of what we have achieved and prepare for further progress in the year ahead.
