One Of The Ten Most Outstanding Young People In The World To Visit EGA young Victorian lawyer who has been described as ‘one of the ten most outstanding young persons in the world for his contributions to children, world peace and human rights’ will attend East Gippsland’s By East Gippsland Shire Council - 14th December 2006 - Back to News Australia Day award ceremony in Orbost on 26 January as the visiting Ambassador.
He is Victorian Young Australian of the Year 2005, Matthew Albert who co-founded the Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning (SAIL) Program that now engages over 250 volunteers at five campuses across Melbourne.
The Sudanese refugee community is the fastest growing ethnic community in Victoria and SAIL provides free tutoring, home help, camps and excursions to about 400 people every week.
Matthew, who spent 2004 working for the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees in Nairobi, Kenya and at the Kakuma refugee camp, remains the Overseeing Coordinator of the program.
He is also the Director of the Sudanese Online Research Association and writes for publications including the Melbourne Age and Eureka Street.
In 2005 Matthew was appointed Australia’s representative to the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Commonwealth Youth Program until 2007. He sits on a caucus and advisory board to the Commonwealth Secretariat for the South Pacific region.
In the same year he was named by Junior Chamber International the worldwide federation of young leaders and entrepreneurs as ‘one of the ten most outstanding young persons in the world’ for his contributions to children, world peace and human rights.
East Gippsland Mayor Cr Mendy Urie said she was delighted Matthew Albert was visiting the region for Australia Day.
"He is a young man whose humane qualities and leadership skills are truly inspiring," she said.
"We will look forward to welcoming him to East Gippsland and having him involved in our celebrations."
