Scouts and cubs clean up Traralgon Creek

A group of scouts and cubs from the West Traralgon Scout Group recently did their bit in ensuring that the Traralgon Creek is free from litter, when they carried out a clean up in the Victory Park/ Newman Park area of the creek.

The scouts were responding to concerns raised during the development of the Traralgon Creek Neighbourhood Environment Improvement Plan during 2005.

The steering committee of the NEIP found that fast food packaging and drink containers constituted a major litter problem in the central urban area with much of the rubbish not placed in bins finding its way into the creek. There was also an issue with people dumping shopping trolleys in the creek.

West Traralgon Scouts approached Latrobe City’s NEIP Officer, Mike Answerth with a project initiated by scout Mathew Boothman, offering to carry out a task which would assist in improving the creek environment.

"Together with their scout leaders, the enthusiastic environmentalists gathered four garbage bags of litter together with two car tyres and a shopping trolley which they recovered from the creek," Mr Answerth explained.

"Latrobe City Council provides a number of bins in Victory Park and Newman Park for users to place their rubbish in, and with a little effort on the part of people using the park, the amount of litter finding its way into the creek could be reduced considerably," he said.

"It is very encouraging to see the scouts undertaking this project to help improve the quality of the creek but we need all members of the community to play their part," Mr Answerth added.
