$9,600 For Powerworks Future Directions Strategy A project to explore and determine the future direction of Morwell’s PowerWorks Energy Education Centre is being supported with $9,600 in Victorian Government funding, By Russell Northe - 22nd June 2012 - Back to News announced Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe today.
Mr Northe said the project would develop a preferred future business model for PowerWorks to meet the objectives of its key stakeholders.
"PowerWorks has been the public access point for the Latrobe Valley brown coal power industry since 1994," Mr Northe said
"The primary aim of PowerWorks is to showcase the important contribution of the Latrobe Valley brown coal sector.
"PowerWorks shareholders - Loy Yang Power, TRUenergy Yallourn and International Power GDF Suez Hazelwood – are keen to identify opportunities for PowerWorks to transition to a different operating model."
Mr Northe said the PowerWorks Energy Education Centre – Future Directions Strategy would enable PowerWorks to define the role it could play in the region’s transition to a low carbon economy.
"The strategy will identify relevant stakeholders, potential sources of funds, new partnerships and outline the common objectives for the stakeholders," Mr Northe said.
"PowerWorks will engage a consultant to undertake research, engage with stakeholders and produce a draft and final report for consideration by the PowerWorks board."
Mr Northe said Victorian Government funding for the PowerWorks Energy Education Centre – Future Directions Strategy would be provided to PowerWorks Pty Ltd through the $1 billion Regional Growth Fund’s Putting Locals First Program.
"Putting Locals First is a $100 million initiative that enables regional communities to devise and deliver service and infrastructure responses that reflect local priorities," Mr Northe said.
"It is supporting stronger and more sustainable regional communities by building their capacity to drive development in their region."
Mr Northe said the PowerWorks Energy Education Centre – Future Directions Strategy was expected to be completed in June 2012.
