Your Chance To ‘Have A Say’

Community members interested in issues around living with disability are being asked to nominate themselves to attend the ‘Having a Say’ conference in 2011.

By Bass Coast - 20th December 2010 - Back to News

The conference is being held 9-11 February 2011, in Geelong and Bass Coast Shire Council will sponsor two residents to attend.

Council’s Community Facilitator - Rural Access, Kathryn Pryor, said nominations close at 5.00pm on Wednesday, 12 January 2011.

"The conference gives local people with disability, or an interest in and understanding of the issues that people with disability experience, the opportunity to increase their leadership skills," said Ms Pryor.

"Delegates also get to network with other people from around the state who are looking to do the same.

"We hope the delegates we send come back with some fresh ideas and enthusiasm to help continue improving access and inclusion for all in Bass Coast.

"There are approximately 5,000 people living in Bass Coast with disability," continued Ms Pryor.

The conference is organised by the Victorian Advocacy League for Individuals with Disability (VALID). This year’s theme is You Are The Voice.

Guest speakers will discuss topics which people with a disability have nominated as issues of interest.

Past topics include Jobs & Wages; Relationships, Dreams & Aspirations; Legal Rights; Self-Advocacy; and Leisure. Most sessions have group activities so that everyone can have a say. If people need support to participate, volunteers are available to assist with writing or drawing individual’s thoughts and comments.

There are also other optional activities that give people a chance to socialise and try something new. The 'Come and Try' activities for 2011 include belly dancing, bocce, canoeing, Bollywood Dancing and bike riding.

Nominations close at 5.00pm Wednesday, 12 January 2011. For a nomination form contact Council’s Community Development Team Leader, Kerri Ritchie, on 1300 BCOAST (226 278), 13 36 77 (for people with speech or hearing difficulties), or email ruralaccess@basscoast.vic.gov.au .
