Minister Asked To Examine San Remo

Bass Coast Shire Council has called on Richard Wynne, the Minister for Local Government to investigate allegations over the rezoning of land in San Remo

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 25th May 2009 - Back to News

The allegations were aired in the South Gippsland Sentinel Times on 28 April and 19 May 2009 and on numerous occasions during 2008.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr John Duscher, said he hoped the motion from the May Council Meeting would resolve the issue.

"I believe everyone – councillors, staff and the community – is tired of these constant attacks on our credibility," said Cr Duscher.

"Not only is it affecting people’s lives, these allegations are undermining the process that we have gone through to develop the San Remo, Newhaven and Cape Woolamai Structure Plan.

"Personally, I am not prepared to sit at this table for the next three years with this shadow and innuendo over Council’s integrity and honesty.

"I am drafting a letter to the Minister, asking him to investigate and resolve this issue once and for all," Cr Duscher outlined.

The letter to the Minister will ask for an urgent meeting with Bass Coast Shire Council’s Mayor and Chief Executive Officer.

"We want to meet with the Minister to discuss this issue and find out what can be done," stated Cr Duscher.

"I know the community want this resolved and will accept the outcome of the Minister’s investigation."

Preparation of the San Remo, Newhaven and Cape Woolamai Structure Plan has taken place over several years. The Structure Plan identifies the issues and future growth opportunities for these areas.

"The process for preparing this structure plan has been very open and transparent," said Cr Duscher.

"There has been a great deal of consultation and many members of the community have put a lot of time and effort into this process.

"This needs to be respected. We want this matter dealt with so that we can all move on."

Council motion:

That the Bass Coast Shire Council request the Minister for Local Government, Hon Richard Wynne MP, to undertake a full, transparent and independent investigation into the allegations that have been made in the South Gippsland Sentinel Times on 19 May 2009, and also during 2008, over the rezoning of land in San Remo.
