Investigations For Boat Ramp Continue

Bass Coast Shire Council continues to investigate options for providing an alternative boat ramp at Coronet Bay.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th December 2008 - Back to News

Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, said two options were being considered.

"We are looking at the possibility of an all tide ramp or a high tide ramp," explained Mr Bawden.

"Before we can move ahead with an alternative boat ramp, we need to fully understand all the implications of this project.

"We have to look at the site constraints, design options, any environmental considerations, the cost and the necessary approvals required for both options."

Mr Bawden said Council hoped to engage a suitably qualified consultant to undertake this work.

"Obviously this project was not on the table when we finalised the current budget, so we will need to look at what funds are available," Mr Bawden said.

"Ultimately, the purpose of hiring a consultant would be to produce a Coronet Bay Boating Action Plan.

"This plan will enable Council and the community to decide on the most effective option for a boat ramp and to seek funding from the relevant agencies, such as Marine Safety Victoria."

Mr Bawden said it was essential that Council fully understood what boat ramp options could be utilised for Coronet Bay.

"Once we know what boat ramp options are viable for the site, we will need to access government funding for this project to get underway," said Mr Bawden.

"Then a detailed proposal can be developed, so that we can secure the necessary funding and approvals.

"A vital part of this process will be to consider the views of the community regarding a new boat ramp. We also need to have further discussions with the relevant State Government departments, including the Department of Sustainability and Environment."

No public boat ramp will be operating in Coronet Bay over the holiday period. Public boat ramp facilities are available at Corinella, Newhaven, Rhyll, Inverloch and Cowes.
