By Latrobe Shire Council - 25th November 2004 - Back to News

The Road Management Plan details how Council will manage its extensive road network in a safe, sustainable and financially responsible manner on a long term basis. Latrobe City Council formally adopted the Plan at its meeting of 15 November 2004.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the Road Management Plan is a complete road asset management plan, and has been developed as a result of the Road Management Act 2004.

"This Act has a significant impact on all road authorities, such as Councils and VicRoads, and other service providers who maintain infrastructure and carry out works on roads. The Act also defines the rights of the road user, and the amended Road Safety Act defines the obligations of the road user," Mr Buckley explained.

"A main objective of the Act is to establish a coordinated management system for public roads that will promote safe and efficient road networks and the responsible use of road reserves. Latrobe’s Road Management Plan also includes a management plan for paths that are on road reserves."

Mr Buckley said that to benefit current and future generations, the Plan quantifies the funds required to ensure that the condition of Latrobe’s road network does not deteriorate over the next ten years.

"It also identifies the long-term budgeting needs of the road network for the next thirty years, considering capital, operational and maintenance requirements," Mr Buckley said.

"Prioritisation of works is based on an optimisation process. The available budgets will be optimised using Council’s Pavement Management System to ensure that funds are spent at the right time and at the right spots.

"Council has also produced a register which details those Council roads which Council has deemed to be ‘public roads’; and the classification of these roads, which in turn identifies the target levels of service or maintenance provided," Mr Buckley added.

Copies of the Road Management Plan and the Register of Public Roads can be viewed and downloaded from the Council’s website. Visit www.latrobe.vic.gov.au and click on ‘For Residents’ and then ‘Roads & Drains’ and then the drop down box ‘Road Management Plan’.

The Road Management Plan may also be inspected at Councils Service Centres in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.
