Residents of Bairnsdale, Paynesville and Wattle Point and surrounding areas could be experiencing heavy smoke from the Blonde Bay Fire.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 26th March 2004 - Back to News

The fire is currently approximately 100 hectares in size and is burning in Banksia and shrub type fuels, under the influence of a Southerly wind. The fire is approximately 1.5 km from Wattle Point and 19 km South West of Bairnsdale.

Over 60 DSE and CFA firefighters and 30 Incident Management staff are working with dozers, tankers, slip ons, and a fire bomber to consolidate the northern boundary of the fire.

Incident Controller, Ewan Waller said that conditions have moderated with the southwest wind change.

"A control line is largely constructed across the northern boundary," Mr Waller said.

" Burning out is expected to be required across the southern boundary within the reserve".

DSE and the CFA have activated an Information Unit at the Bairnsdale Office to keep the community informed about this fire and can be contacted on 51520400
