Wellington Shire Council’s Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre has been short-listed for two highly prestigious awards for architectural and building excellence.

The centre is a contender in the Royal Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Chapter 2004 Awards for Institutional - New Building and will also be eligible for the Regional Prize which will be announced on 18 June.

It is also in the running for the Master Builders Association of Victoria Excellence in Construction Awards in the category of New Project over $3 million. The winner of this award to be revealed on 10 June.

Harmer Architecture and Hyder Consulting managed the design and construction process for the multi-million dollar entertainment centre project and Gippsland-based master builder R&J van Poppel undertook construction.

The facility is essentially a ‘waterfront’ building, intrinsically linked to the Port of Sale it joins. Conceived as a long wedge shaped structure, sloped in section from a high point at the main entrance down to a lower point towards the port, it visually links the urban mass of the town centre with the adjacent riverbank and park areas.

The unique design of the centre is punctuated by a tall, dark grey concrete and steel structure in a fan shape which mirrors the theatre inside.

This facility is providing a much-needed new focal point for the performing arts in Wellington and the Gippsland region.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: " We’re delighted that this great venue should be short listed for this prestigious awards program, which continues the tremendous success that the centre has enjoyed with the Wellington and regional communities since it opened six months ago.

"The facility is a great tribute to the creativity, design, and construction expertise of Harmer Architecture, Hyder Consulting and R&J van Poppel."

The entertainment centre will also be featuring in leading design magazine Monument next month.
