Former Mayor honoured with Order of Australia

Wellington Shire Council is delighted that former Mayor, the late Gordon Cameron, has been posthumously awarded the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Said Wellington’s present Mayor John Jago: "Gordon contributed a huge amount to the local community and to Wellington Shire Council and has been sadly missed. He was one of Wellington’s and Maffra’s best-loved and most respected citizens. We are delighted for his family that his contributions have received the national recognition they deserve."

Born and educated in Maffra, Gordon was a long-standing member of local government. He also worked for Australia Post for 40 years, retiring as Divisional Manager Gippsland in 1989, and was an active member of the Anglican Church.

He served as a Maffra Shire Councillor until local government reorganisation in 1994 and was elected to Wellington Shire Council in 1997, serving as its first Mayor 1997/98. In March 2000 he was re-elected as a Wellington Shire Councillor and was also elected for his second term as Mayor 2000/01.

Both Gordon and his wife, Pat, (a former Maffra Shire Councillor for eight years and Shire President in 1988/89) were recognised for their contribution to the community in 1996 when they were joint winners of the Wellington Shire Citizen of the Year Award.

Gordon worked throughout his life for community organisations across Maffra, including:

The Rotary Club of Maffra;
Maffra & District Development Group;
Maffra Bowls & Recreation Club;
Maffra Community Sports Club;
Maffra Secondary College School Council;
Chairman for two years and member for seven years of Macalister water Board.

He died in June last year, leaving his wife, three adult children and 11 grandchildren.
