Megan Eenjes 200 GamesMegan Eenjes (Nee Metcalf) Will Celebrate Her 200Th Game In Elite Representative Basketball This Sunday At The Traralgon Sports Stadium When
Latrobe City Energy Takes On The Melbourne Uni. By David Roberts - 24th June 2005 - Back to News Eenjes started her career back in 1991 at the age of 16 years when the
Traralgon T-Birds where included in the formation of the Country Victorian
Invitational Basketball League (CVIBL). Over her 14 year career in elite basketball Eenjes has represented 3
different teams, including Traralgon, Gippsland Pacers and now Latrobe City
Energy. She has played in 9 finals games and in 15 Australian Basketball
Association games and in two All-Star games in 1992 and 1993.
The majority of games have been played for the Traralgon T-Birds; her home
association where she began as a junior player. With Traralgon, Eenjes has achieved some career highlights and none better
than the Division 1 Victorian Basketball League Championship Win in 2001.
"This was clearly the highlight of my career" Eenjes recalls.
"We had a strong team and had worked hard to achieve the ultimate goal and
personally I played well and contributed to the teams success," she said.
Bruce Pickering, President of the Traralgon Basketball Association and then
Coach of the T-Birds said that it had been a great pleasure coaching Megan
and he remembers the 2001 season well.
"Megan began with the T-Birds as a raw young kid and through her
perseverance and dedication to the team, fast became a foundation player, a
great role model and team leader " Pickering said.
"She had a vital role in our 2001 Championship Win, she consistent on the
court and her leadership held the team together"
She thoroughly deserves the accolades associated with playing 200 elite
games and representing the area in the top rung of women’s basketball in
Victoria.
Over her career, Eenjes has often taken on the role of Captain and Assistant
Coach and returned this year in both of these roles to assist the
development of the Latrobe City Energy team.
"I was keen to reach the 200 game milestone as a significant personal
achievement, but was also drawn to opportunity to support the ongoing
development of women’s basketball in Gippsland"
While the Energy team is struggling for on court success in the Division 2
Big V this year and yet to win a game, Eenjes has once again shown her
leadership qualities.
In addition, Eenjes leads the Energy team in blocked shots (16), rebounds
(131) and assists (16). She has scored 88 points in 12 games, with many of
these from her strength under the basket.
Megan has seen and has been part of many changes to basketball in the area
over her 200 game career, she has taken time out to have 2 children as well.
When asked of her future aspirations, Megan declares that this is likely to
be her last year as a player and after that she hopes to return to a
coaching role within the junior ranks and does not exclude the possibility
of coaching at an elite level.
Latrobe City Energy representative Peter Ruane, said has been great to have
Megan playing this year and she has added a great deal to Energy’s
development.
"Her tally of 200 games is an incredible effort and should be put up as one
of the major achievements for in women’s basketball in this area" he said.
"We expect that many people will come out and support Megan at 2pm Sunday at
the Traralgon Basketball Stadium and people should arrive early to make sure
they are part of the celebrations and presentations both before and after
the game" Ruane concluded.
