Walk The Talk Kits Launched

New ‘Walk the Talk’ walking kits, aimed at motivating and supporting people to become more active in their daily lives, are now available for loan to library members at Latrobe City libraries.

By Latrobe City Council - 18th April 2007 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s library collections coordinator, Jeanette Moore, said that the walking kit comprised a pedometer and information on the benefits of walking and how to make the most of walking time.

"It is planned that over time we will add new information on walking trails and local community group details. The kit and system have been designed to encourage community members in becoming more active and it is our aim to make these sorts of resources more accessible through our libraries and possibly even our leisure centres and the local neighbourhood houses," Ms Moore said.

Ms Moore said that the kits were launched at the recent ‘Go for your Life’ day at Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough which saw an enthusiastic group of local walkers, passionate about raising awareness of arthritis, participating in a steps challenge using the walking kits.

"During the Go for your Life Latrobe event, local walkers raised $261.15 by walking 52,631 steps using the pedometers from the Walk the Talk kits. Delighted by this success, the group is hoping to do something similar next year," Ms Moore concluded.

The ‘Walk the Talk’ kits were funded through the Seniors Go for your Life program and Latrobe City Community Development, with significant input and support from the Latrobe Active Communities Network and the Central West Gippsland Primary Care Partnership.

To become a library member, visit a branch library and present two pieces of identification, one of which should show your current local address (eg driver’s licence, utility bill, rental agreement etc).
