School Crossing Safety Increased At NewhavenNew 40km/h speed zone to be implemented at the school crossing By Carol McCormack - 11th December 2002 - Back to News The safety of local school children will increase when a new 40km/h speed zone is implemented at the school crossing on the Phillip Island Tourist Road in Newhaven early next year.
Council and members of the community raised concerns with VicRoads about pedestrian safety in the area. VicRoads recently approved a reduction of the speed limit in the area. However, the speed limit reduction will only be in force while the crossing is in operation.
"It will be a 40km/h speed zone from 8:10am until 9:10am and 2:50pm until 3:50pm on school days only," said Charles Taveira, Operations Engineer with Bass Coast Shire Council. "Outside these times, the speed limit will revert back to 6okm/h/."
Charles said that signs will be placed 150 metres from the crossing on either side to warn motorists of the change of speed limit. The school crossing supervisor will change the signs. The new speed limit will apply from the start of the school year in 2003.
