Council Briefs

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 19th January 2004 - Back to News

RECORD QUANTITIES OF RECYCLABLES

Record quantities of recyclables from the East Gippsland Shire Council kerbside recycling collection system were recorded in the first two weeks after Christmas.

Tambo Waste has reported that the collection system, which services over 14,000 households Shire-wide, yielded 138 tonnes of recyclables (equivalent to about 10kg per household) in this period.

"This is an excellent result and citizens are congratulated on their efforts to use the recycling bins," said Waste Operations Officer, Tilo Junge.

"Residents need to ensure only recyclable materials are placed in the bin, as the sorting line uses manual pickers to segregate the recyclable products into their separate categories.

"If people are unsure on the recyclable type they should contact Tambo Waste or Council staff," Tilo said.

OVERHANGING BRANCHES

East Gippsland Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Steve Kozlowski, would like to remind residents to keep an eye on overhanging branches on their own private property.

"It is an owner’s responsibility to maintain their trees and shrubs to a fence or property line, primarily to ensure footpaths and walkways are safe for pedestrian traffic," Steve said.

"The issue is not a major problem as the majority of residents maintain their properties quite well, however some walkways are currently of concern to citizens, particularly the elderly.

"While we do our best to maintain overhanging trees and branches on nature strips and other Shire land, we would like to remind residents of their duty to remove any dangerous overhanging branches on their private property," Steve said.

QUARTERLY RATES REMINDER

Residents are reminded that third quarterly municipal rate instalments are due on 29 February 2004.

Over 30 per cent of residents use the quarterly instalment system.

Rate notices will be sent out in the coming week. If ratepayers do not receive their reminder notice they should contact the Shire Rates Unit on 5153 9500.
