Resonances: experience the world of Islamic art

Resonances, a survey of paintings by local artist Jeremy Elkington, is Latrobe Regional Gallery’s current exhibition at the Community Access Gallery, and runs until Sunday 27 July, 2003.

By Latrobe City Council - 24th July 2003 - Back to News

Latrobe Regional Gallery’s, Sherryn Vardy, said that through the paintings, Elkington has captured emotion, musical inspiration, grand atmosphere and an intensity of beauty which encompass the art, architecture and landscapes associated with the Islamic world.

"There is an emphasis on surface decoration in Islamic art and it is associated with musical structures, tones, textures, calligraphy, geometry and design. This Islamic style also suggests mystery, history, romanticism and sensuality, and all these things assist Elkington to achieve his personal expression," Ms Vardy said.

"It was during the artist’s short trip to Egypt in 2001 that he intensified his knowledge of the Orient and his appreciation of Islamic art and architecture. Photographs taken on this trip have been used as a source of inspiration for a selection of these paintings," Ms Vardy explained.

"The 18 paintings in the exhibition are from the years 1998 to 2003 and include works completed during his studies for his Master of Arts (by research) at Monash University Gippsland Campus which he achieved in 2002," Ms Vardy continued.

Resonances is on display until Sunday 27 July. The Community Access Gallery is available for hire by local artists and community groups. Please contact the Gallery for application forms.
