By Howard Emanuel - 3rd October 2004 - Back to News As a candidate for the Federal seat of McMillan I have a very clear position on the establishment of a National Park or similar public land area in Gippsland’s Strzelecki Ranges.
I support the development and ongoing management by the Victorian state Government of a National Park or similar in the Strzelecki Ranges, the exact status, site and size to be determined by interested parties, the state government and the community through a public process.
To my mind given the pressures that abound on our natural resources in this state it is even more poignant that the Bracks Government recognise the call from the community and act on the undertaking by then Shadow Environment Minister Sheryl Garbutt in 1999 in the lead up to the state election of that year to, at the very least consider the establishment of a protected park area in the Strzeleckis.
The Strzeleckis are a high-value public asset entrusted to the current generation of Gippslanders and Victorians and if we are to ensure this asset is bequeathed to our children with its integrity at least somewhat intact, we must act now. As every day goes by there is essentially less to preserve.
Thank you.
Howard Emanuel.
