Dog and cat registration reminderWellington Shire Council is reminding dog and cat owners that the deadline to register their pets is 10 April. By Wellington Shire Council - 15th March 2005 - Back to News Annual renewal notices will be distributed across the shire shortly. New pet owners who do not receive a notice, are urged to contact the council as soon as possible.
If a pet is being registered for the first time, it needs to be done in person at one of the council’s customer service centres. Under recently introduced changes to Victorian Government legislation, pet owners must now register their pets from three months of age.
Renewal of existing registrations can be done over the counter at the council’s Sale and Yarram customer service centres, at any Australia Post outlet, or through the council’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au (click on ‘Payments’ on the home page top menu bar).
The standard fee for registration is $63.00, with a reduced rate of $21.00 applicable for desexed or microchipped pets, those aged over ten years, farm dogs and pets with an approved certificate of obedience. A further discount of 50% on these charges is available to pensioners who present a concession card.
Registering a dog or cat makes it much easier for the council to reunite a lost pet with its owner. The registration fee also helps to support pet-related services in Wellington such as animal control and community education about responsible dog ownership.
Failure to register a dog or cat may result in a $205 fine.
Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "We are encouraging pet owners to ensure they get their dog or cat registered before the deadline. Registration is an important part of caring for your pet, it assists the council with returning lost pets home."
