CEO Steve Kozlowski said that while there is no regulatory requirement for Council to operate under a portfolio system it had proved to be very successful since it was introduced in 2003 and enhanced in 2004.

"The aim of introducing portfolios for Councillors was to identify areas of common interest among Councillors and to distribute some of the workload across given activities," he said.

"The system also provides a number of other benefits including the distribution of strategic work among Councillors, accommodation of special interests and expertise and the determination of Council representation on outside groups.

"It also identifies primary contact for Officers, builds continuity of knowledge and expertise, provides for the professional development of Councillors and promotes a "trusting" environment."

In addition to portfolio representation, Councillors will also sit on more than 20 advisory Boards and committees.
