Tree Works Planned At Churchill And Newborough

Latrobe City Council’s tree maintenance crew are planning medium scale tree works at Latrobe Leisure Churchill and College Park Newborough, to commence at the end of March.

By Latrobe City - 22nd March 2012 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that the works were a necessary safety measure and will enhance the local environment for patrons and pedestrians.

"At Latrobe Leisure Churchill paperbarks (Melaleuca) parallel to the driveway entrance of the centre will be removed. These trees have now grown to a stage where they are structurally unsound and unfortunately have a history of failures.

"The existing gum trees (Eucalyptus maculata and citriodora) will be retained with further plantings of similar trees to strengthen the area and create a more prominent and impressive avenue of trees along the entrance. In total, thirty new gum trees will be planted along with an assortment of native shrubs," Cr Vermeulen said.

"At College Park Newborough, located between Monash Rd and John Field Drive, a clean up will be undertaken throughout the entire park to assist with future maintenance. It has become overgrown in places and difficult to navigate. A tidy, safe park would encourage more visitors and users.

"The tree crew will remove dead trees, slashing the drain, remove invasive weeds and replanting native trees within the park," Cr Vermeulen explained.

"We understand the deep passion that people in the community have when it comes to the trees, particularly natives, and their removal. However, safety is our priority and it would be remiss of us to leave these trees in their current state. Whilst we may be removing trees we are also replanting with native species suitable to the environment.

"We would hope the community is understanding of the need to remove the danger these trees pose to users of both facilities and that they take care during the time of the works," Cr Vermeulen concluded.
