Moe roundabout landscaping highlights gold heritageThe landscaping and beautification of the roundabout at Old Sale Road and Moore Street in Moe is almost complete, with sculptures, signs and a variety of landscapes featuring in the new design. By Latrobe Shire Council - 30th August 2004 - Back to News The roundabout landscaping was a Pride of Place Project funded by the State Government's Department of Infrastructure, aimed at making the main entrance to Moe from Walhalla more visually pleasing to residents and visitors.
Latrobe City Councillor, Tony Zimora, said that upgrading the roundabout to enhance the appeal of the region was important, as it was located in a high profile location accessed by a large number of people visiting local tourist attractions and outdoor leisure spots located in and around the municipality.
"Latrobe is situated in a wonderful location, surrounded by mountains, beaches, river trails and snow fields. Therefore, the region is popular with tourists and locals who want to make the most of these attractions. It is important that the gateways to these areas are well maintained so that people continue to see just how great the Latrobe region is," Cr Zimora said.
Latrobe City Councillor, Lisa Price, said that a gold rush theme has been incorporated into the new design as the roundabout is situated on the main route to Walhalla.
"The search for gold in the mountains north of the Latrobe Valley and the enormous wealth that followed from its extraction, particularly in Walhalla, played a critical role in the development of the region. The rich heritage that has been left as a legacy of the mining, today attracts numerous tourists to the region, and the theme adopted in the roundabout design highlights the importance of this heritage," Cr Price said.
"Three decorative fence panels with special steel sculptures that depict scenes from the gold rush days feature on one corner of the roundabout. Decorative walls with directional signs have also been incorporated as a feature on the central island of the roundabout, and a combination of soft and hard landscaped areas have been included in the design," Cr Price said.
The project was managed, designed and supervised by Latrobe City Council and contracted by John Hart of Consider Concrete. The metal sculpture on the west corner of the roundabout was created by Jim Lawrence of Country Steel & Wood.
