Back to 40km and nominate your crossing supervisorTime to nominate for the School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Awards. By Portal Admin - 13th May 2018 - Back to News Students are back to school this week after the Easter break and Bass Coast Shire Council are reminding community members and parents that School Zone speed limits are back in place, and it’s time to nominate for the School Crossing Supervisor of the Year Awards.
Drivers are reminded that when approaching school crossings, they should slow down to 40 km/h or less, watch for children and remember not to stop too close to the crossing.
Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, asked parents to remember and be mindful of parking rules during drop off and pick up times
"Sometimes it can be tempting to double park for a moment, or sneak into a bus zone or no standing zone, but it’s always better to find a safer park further away and enjoy the short walk," Cr Rothfield said.
School crossings must be completely vacated of all pedestrians before driving through.
It’s also important to not park too close to the School crossings. Crossing supervisors need a clear field of vision in all directions around their crossing so they can spot approaching children and vehicles as soon as possible.
The Mayor also explained that nominations for Crossing Supervisor of the Year are now open and encouraged community members to nominate their local crossing supervisor.
"Our crossing supervisors have an incredibly important job which they do so well," Cr Rothfield said.
"As well as ensuring safe crossing, their daily interaction with students can often make a difference by encouraging them to start the school day with a smile and ensuring they leave school safely. Please make sure you acknowledge their contribution by nominating them."
School Crossing Supervisor of the Year nominations are open until Friday 25 May. The nomination form can be completed online at the School Crossings Victoria website: https://www.schoolcrossingsvictoria.com.au/supervisor-year-awards/
Council and Victoria Police will be monitoring school crossings and driver behaviour generally around schools in coming weeks to promote safer behaviour around schools, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.
