Bring your camera and prepare for your heart to swell a size by this little slice of paradise. Petersons Lookout is located just over 2 hours’ drive east of Melbourne, just north of Morwell and Traralgon, in the bushland surrounds of Tyers Park.

Petersons Lookout

In Tyers Park, you can walk up the short Petersons Lookout Trail (400m, 10 minutes one-way) for unparalleled views of the Tyers Gorge. Here you can watch the Tyers River wind through the bushland and see birds wheeling through the canopy. The best views are to be had in early morning or late afternoon when the gorge is bathed in a soft golden light. Camera essential. These show-stopping views are Insta-worthy.

If you are feeling up to it, pack some snacks and go for a longer walk along the Wirilda Trail (18km, 6 hours one way), which follows the river deep into the heart of the forest. Wirilda is another name for swamp wattle, which you will find along the riverbank, among silvergums and tea trees.
