Moe’s first-ever women’s cricket team will make history at Ted Summerton Reserve tomorrow, playing its inaugural match at the upgraded venue, backed by the Victorian Government. Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing MP, representing Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence, today joined the team’s coach and players at the reserve to celebrate its major upgrade, supported by more than $11 million through the Regional Sports Infrastructure Program.

Upgrades include accessible facilities, media rooms, a redeveloped oval, new cricket wicket, electronic scoreboard and improved lighting for night matches and major events

Inclusive sporting upgrades

The inaugural senior women’s cricket team will be among the first to benefit from the reserve’s transformation, which includes female-friendly change rooms in the main pavilion to better support women and girls in sport. A new accessible Changing Places facility and two first-floor media rooms have also been added to the pavilion for enhanced match-day coverage.

Footballers and cricketers can enjoy the redeveloped oval, featuring a new playing surface and centre turf wicket, alongside new player bench shelters, goal posts, netting and sight screens. A new electronic scoreboard and upgraded 750 lux LED lighting will create a better experience for players and spectators, while opening more opportunities for night matches, regional competitions and major sporting events.

New sporting facilities

Netballers and officials now have a new purpose-built pavilion, with modern change facilities and dedicated storage, supporting local competitions and club operations. The new facilities will support the Moe Football Netball Club as it builds on three consecutive A Grade netball premierships from 2023 to 2025.

Finishing touches are underway on new undercover terraced areas at both ends of the ground, new cricket training facility, and accessible footpaths across the reserve, making the venue safer and easier for players and visitors of all abilities to get around.

Reserve upgrade boosts sport

The upgrades come in a landmark year for the reserve’s home club, the Moe Lions senior men’s football team which this year claimed its first Gippsland League premiership since 1967. The reserve is also home to the Gippsland Regional Cricket Centre and Moe Cricket Club, whose senior men’s teams have won premierships in every senior grade over the past five seasons. The upgrades will support player development and help attract more visitors to the region, providing a boost to local businesses.

The upgrades to Ted Summerton Reserve also celebrate Gunaikurnai culture through artwork by local Moe Gunnai artist Alice Pepper, whose designs will be sandblasted onto footpaths across the venue, reflecting generations of connection to Country, community and the shared experience of sport.

The redevelopment of Ted Summerton Reserve is being delivered by Latrobe City Council on behalf of Sport and Recreation Victoria and in partnership with the local community. Gippsland company Langden Construction is leading the building and civil works, with Evergreen Turf redeveloping the oval. The project has already supported more than 370 jobs and engaged more than 80 businesses.
