Preschool open days to start 2002 preschool enrolment campaignLatrobe City’s twenty-four preschools will open their doors to parents of preschool age children By Latrobe City Council - 28th May 2001 - Back to News Latrobe City’s twenty-four preschools will open their doors to parents of preschool age children during the first two weeks of June in a series of open days.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the open days were the first stage in a campaign of maximising preschool enrolments in Latrobe for the 2002 preschool year, by providing parents with an opportunity to view facilities, meet staff, and discuss preschool programs being operated at the centres.
"Preschool gives children a vital head-start in the education process, by providing them with essential learning and behavioural skills prior to undertaking primary school," Cr Jenkins said.
"This Council is anxious to ensure that as many children as possible benefit from the preschool experience. We are extremely fortunate that we have excellent pre-school teachers and a society that cares about the welfare and future wellbeing of its youngest citizens. These open days provide parents with the perfect opportunity to talk to the experts in the field, the staff who run the centres, and discuss children’s readiness for preschool, the various programs being offered at individual preschools, and how those programs can be of maximum benefit to each child.
"During the next three months, we will be promoting the advantages of preschool, from the opening of enrolments in mid-June to the close of on-time enrolments in August; together with details of the benefits, discounts and any fee relief available for healthcare and pension card holders, those with more than one child at pre-school, and families experiencing financial hardship," Cr Jenkins said.
"Latrobe City is one of less than a handful of Councils taking an active and positive role in the provision of pre-school services, and has remained committed to encouraging and maximising pre-school attendances, because it firmly believes that local government has a responsibility to give its youngest citizens the best possible start in life," Councillor Jenkins concluded.
Children who turn four years of age before 30 April 2002 will be eligible for preschool enrolment in Latrobe City from Monday 18 June, with on-time enrolments closing on Friday 10 August 2001.
