Group Manager Marketing and Community Relations, Michael Edgar, said public access would be impeded by problems with the climate control system; and access restrictions to some areas where work still had to be completed, made temporary closure the only practical option.
"We very much regret having to close our doors to the public, particularly so soon after the reopening, but we have little choice. The work was scheduled to have all been completed, but some still remains outstanding, accentuated by some industry supply delays. Problems with the climate control system have now added to the inconvenience.
"We want those visiting the gallery to enjoy their experience, it is important that their visit is a memorable one for them in a positive way; and in the current circumstances, this cannot be achieved," Mr Edgar said.
At this stage we have been told that the work will have been undertaken by the end of next week, and the gallery can then reopen. As soon as this can be positively confirmed, we will advertise the reopening extensively," Mr Edgar added.
