Crime Prevention Project Officer Dale Simmonds will be at our October meeting to discuss your safety issues. The Safer Gippsland Project has been established to assist council in addressing local crime prevention and community safety issues. The basic theme of safer design is about looking how the physical design and layout of our neighbourhoods can affect the levels of crime and fear within our communities. As part of the Safer Gippsland Project, two training sessions in Safer Design guidelines and principles will be given by Dale Simmonds. The sessions will be held on Thurs. 7th Nov. 2002 and Thurs. 14th Nov. 2002 both will run from am to 4pm, at the Council Chambers cnr. Hazelwood Rd. / Anne St. Morwell. All interested people should ring Dale on 5173 1594

Neighbourhood Watch :

Perhaps you think that Neighbourhood Watch is a totally passive program. Just a process of waiting for some predator to come along to break into your house, and to purloin your belongings. Perhaps it is, if that is how you approach it.

But it doesn’t need to be. Neighbourhood Watch isn’t about relying totally on others to do something to protect you from the slings and arrows of real life. It is about the community at large being proactive, in looking after itself and its members. And it needs all of us to be in the team to make it effective.

Here are some of the things that Neighbourhood Watch members can do to make a positive contribution to community welfare:

· Be always aware of the need to prevent crime happening in the first place.
· Make your home secure.
· Stay alert and report anything suspicious to the police.
· Support vulnerable people, such as the elderly, and help them to avoid becoming victims.
· Improve the environment to give people a sense of pride in our neighbourhood and discourage vandalism.
· Mark your property to put off thieves and enable stolen property to be returned.
· Reduce the fear of crime by being visibly active.

There’s a lot Neighbourhood Watch can do to make a real difference to the area where we live, and in the final analysis, We are Neighbourhood Watch.

DO REMEMBER IN ANY EMERGENCY WHEN YOU NEED THE POLICE, AMBULANCE OR FIRE BRIGADE DIAL 000. ASK THE OPERATOR FOR THE SERVICE YOU REQUIRE, YOU WILL BE SWITCHED THROUGH IMMEDIATELY.

For queries about Neighbourhood Watch ring S/C Brendan Clifford on 5132 2155.

Smoke Detectors:

Daylight saving starts at the end of this month, when you change your clocks change your smoke detector batteries at the same time if they have been in for a year. Scratch the date on the new batteries when you install them.
