Tennis Victoria Region 13 Pennant Round 16Top side Sale Hurricanes struggles By John Glynn - 20th February 2002 - Back to News Top side Sale Hurricanes struggled against seventh side Bairnsdale Dragons in a worrying display with just two home and away matches remaining. Dragons’ men showed some flaws in the top side’s armour which will give some comfort to sides below them leading into the finals on March 16th. Hurricanes created a handy 8 game lead after the mixed doubles. In the match of the day, Hurricanes’ Mark Elliman and Melanie Bach took a third set tiebreaker from Tim Dowie and Serrin Cooper. With Dragons’ men winning each of their singles, and Hurricanes’ women winning theirs the margin was just 11 games at the end of the day.
Maffra Marvels put paid to any hopes Sale Spitfires may have had in making the finals. A convincing 18 game margin was a confidence builder for the third place Marvels. Two of the mixed doubles were shared with third set tiebreakers with a 10 game break being set up by Ross Allen and Sheeley Missen winning 6/1 6/1 over Brett Figas and Anna Duffield. The stronger Marvels singles combination extended to lead to register a good win. Spitfires’ Brett Figas scored an upset win over Trevor Henry 8/4, and Kelly Krusic was locked in a tight battle with Kerry Collett before rain washed out play at 6-all.
Second placed Maffra Magic lost only one rubber against Rockley in a big win. In a high standard mixed doubles, David Taylor and Tracey McConnell-Henry overcame a spirited Andrew Swarski and Cushla DeMuth 6/2 in the third set, before Magic made a clean sweep of the singles. In a top rubber, Janette Ingram defeated Mandy Mayman 8/6.
Sale Roulettes encountered some strong resistance from Bairnsdale Falcons outlasting them by only 8 games. This was the margin after the mixed doubles with Roulettes looking set for a comfortable victory. The young Falcons team played some of their best singles for the season with three rubbers going to a tiebreaker, all to Roulettes. Jason Green defeated Daniel Robertson in a bottler, and Jackie Figas outlasted Emily Spencer.
